Sworn Positions

  • A CART member responds to incidents where a child is abducted or missing. The CART member may be called at a moment’s notice to respond to surrounding agencies or counties in order to assist with child abduction/child missing cases.

  • The Crime Prevention Officer works within the community to promote and enhance crime prevention programs and community involvement.  This includes programs for adults, businesses, juveniles, senior citizens, businesses and community groups.  Includes involvement in other community outreach through social media or other means.

  • Detectives are plainclothes officers who are responsible for investigations of criminal activities and have considerable independence for taking actions needed to obtain evidence and prepare cases for prosecution.

  • The sUAS drone pilot provides airborne support to police operations in a safe, responsible, and transparent manner to preserve the peace, reduce response times, and increase the quality of life in West Melbourne.

  • In addition to regularly assigned patrol duties, officers assigned to this unit are responsible for the training and evaluation of newly assigned probationary police officers.

  • The K9 unit is comprised of sworn patrol officers who partner with their assigned police dog to supplement patrol duties and police department operations.  Dogs are trained in obedience, handler protection, searches, article tracking, criminal apprehension and narcotics.  The dog lives with the handler at their residence. 

  • Members of this unit are assigned to focus on traffic safety, enforcement of traffic violations, and focusing on problematic areas where there are complaints about traffic issues.  Members of this division also have the option to patrol on a department-owned motorcycle.  In addition to their traffic duties, they are responsible for Traffic Homicide Investigations.

  • The patrol division consists of uniformed officers who regularly patrol the city and respond to calls for service.  Their main responsibility is the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, crime prevention, preservation of the public peace, and apprehension of criminals.

  • The Special Investigations Unit is assigned to a number of duties in an undercover and plainclothes capacity.  This may include investigation of drug, vice, and organized crimes. 

  • The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team is comprised of sworn members of the department that assist with the resolution of high-risk situations.  This may include execution of search warrants, resolving hostage or barricaded subject situations, and any other situation that assists in the response to an incident. 

  • Investigate violations of state and federal law regarding narcotics and other controlled substances. Participate in undercover operations; maintain surveillance of suspects to detect modus operandi. Observe and photograph narcotic purchase transactions to compile evidence and protect undercover investigators.

  • The Training Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that new and veteran officers meet the training requirements of the position, including new-hire training and in-service training that is conducted on an annual and ongoing basis.  Serves as a member of the recruitment team to attract qualified candidates to the department.
